Nowadays a lot of people occupy small living areas. That’s why so many interior designers develop projects dedicated to helping you create your perfect home in a limited space. The idea of this article is to give you some ideas on how to furnish and decorate a small living room.
One way of fooling the eye to perceive the room bigger, is to use light colors and create smart contrasts. In the example we’ve shown you, the walls of the room are painted white. The color of the walls makes the living room feel more open and airy. Light colors are more reflective, which maximizes the effect created by natural light from the windows. Lighter colors also make the room brighter and more inviting. The floor boards in the room are also light and creamy in color, and the window coverings are transparent, to let more light in.
What’s important for a small living room, is to keep it tidy and organized, so cut the clutter as much as possible. If there’s too much stuff scattered around, the room will feel busy and overcrowded. Also, don’t use too many decoration items. It is a good idea to create a focal point – one area or feature that will draw the eye. For a small living room, as is our case, it could be a darker-colored wall decoration. Furniture arrangement further draws the focus to this area. The light, soft green of the sofa creates a contrast with the wall behind it. Another trick is to place a smaller rug, to create the illusion of more floor space.
Use shorter furniture, because tall furniture make the ceiling look lower than it actually is. You may also use darker-colored furniture, since dark objects tend to look smaller, thus creating the illusion of more space between the separate items. Place the larger furniture against the wall, so that the open space in the middle of the living room is not broken up.
With a few smart decisions, any small living room can be turned into a cozy, modern recreation area in your home. Take your time to plan the design and look online for more solutions.
