Keeping your furniture clean will not only make it look more inviting, it will also increase the life of the materials. In this article we will show you how to clean your upholstery furniture easily and effectively.
Start by removing any dirt from the upholstery with a small brush. Brush until it is free from any visible dirt or dust. If the furniture has loose cushions, remove them and brush them separately. When you are done, vacuum the furniture. Use a brush attachment on the vacuum cleaner and vacuum all the upholstery, including both sides of any loose cushions.
The next step is to make a detergent solution. Get a large mixing bowl and mix 1 part laundry detergent and 4 parts warm water. Make sure to use a detergent that doesn’t contain bleach, because it might ruin the upholstery. Stir the mixture until the texture is creamy. A quarter cup of detergent, plus a full cup of water, should be enough to clean a large piece of furniture, like a couch. Before you start, test the detergent solution on some hidden spot, like the back or the underside of the upholstery. Just dip a sponge into the mixture and rub. Then wipe the spot dry with a cloth and let it air dry completely. If any discoloration occurs, don’t use the detergent mixture. Instead consider having the furniture cleaned professionally.
If the test goes well, scrub the detergent solution into all of the upholstery with a sponge. Wipe dry with a cloth as you work. Allow the mixture to sit for a few minutes on any stains and tough spots. When you are finished, allow the furniture to dry and the replace the loose cushions.
To keep your upholstery furniture clean, vacuum regularly. This will reduce the amount of heavy soiling and the need to deep clean the furniture. Vacuuming the upholstery once a week will keep it looking better for longer.
