Your old dining table may still be stable, but it time it starts to look worn out. If you don’t want to throw it out or can’t afford a new one at the moment, you can try to refurbish it. Here’s how to do that.

Go to your local hardware store and purchase sand paper ranging from 60 to 150 grit, sanding block, brushes, stain and clear coat. The total cost of all the things you need won’t exceed $25. Keep in mind that you will need to do the job outside, because the dust from sanding and the fumes from staining and clear coating can cause injuries. Also, make sure you wear protective eye wear at all times.

sanding

Start with the 60 grit sanding paper. It is very coarse and will remove most of the old stain and any marks on the surface. Follow the grain of the wood and never go across it. While sanding, it is a good idea to wear a dust mask and proper protective eye wear to prevent any dust from going into your eyes.

Next, with 100 grit sanding paper remove all the remaining old stains. This will also smooth out the wood, so that it won’t have any rough spots. Just like with the 60 grit sanding paper, make sure you don’t go across the grain of the wood. Remember to wear the dust mask and the protective eye wear, while you’re working.

The last step in sanding is to use a 150 grit sanding paper. This will make the surface of the dining table slick to the touch. When you complete the sanding process, use an air compressor to blow the dust particles off. Alternatively, you can dampen a paper towel and gently wipe the surface.

 staining

Your old dining table should now be ready for staining. You can do this with a foam brush. If you don’t have one, you can cut an old T-shirt and use a small piece of it. This works even better. Apply a thick, even coat across the entire dining table. Wait for about 10 minutes and off any extra stain that remains with a clean piece of cloth. Then, wait for about an hour and apply a second coat of stain. Keep doing this until you achieve the desired color. Make sure you wait for an hour after each coat. After applying the last coat, let the dining table dry for at least 8 hours.

After your dining table dries, you will need to clear coat it. To apply the clear coat, use a horse hair brush. After you apply one coat, you will need to use a new brush or clean the used one by soaking it in paint thinner, before you apply a second coat. You must wait for the dining table to dry for at least six hours in between coats. Before you apply each next coat, gently sand the surface with 150 grit sanding paper. Keep in mind that you’re not trying to sand off the entire clear coat. You just need to sand off the bubbles, which may occur during the clear coating process. The more coats you apply, the smoother the dining table will be. To get a bar top finish, you will need three coats. Then, the surface will be very slick and you will be able to slide things across it. More coats will also provide better protection for your dining table, so that the stain is not ruined. After you’re done with the clear coating, the table will need to cure for 2 days, before you can use it.

This is a really simple way to refurbish an old dining table and make it look like new. After the two-day curing process, you may put your dining table back in the dining room and use it. You can invite friends over for dinner and show off your newly refurbished table.
